Across the board, these portraits are great. By the facial expressions of the subjects, you can tell that you have engendered a level of trust with them (or they can't see that giant camera in your hand). Also, great colors. I love the shallow depth of field. What are you taking these with?
Kirk! Glad you've had a chance to check out the project, and I saw your comment on my other blog as well... It's been great fun to be able to share this work, and I'm excited about the continuation (southward) of the fall and winter. I've been shooting with a Canon 5D and a 50mm fixed lens (f1.2). Many of the portraits have been shot at 1.2, but I'm experimenting with slightly smaller apertures to allow for more overall clarity. Hope your summer has gone well!
What is the face of America in the 21st century? This is the driving question behind Face of America, a visual odyssey of the western hemisphere as told by the faces of its inhabitants. Photographer Mark McCambridge documents his travels from Alaska to Argentina throughout 2009. Additional photographs and stories from Mark can be found at markmccambridge.blogspot.com.
